The Ensemble Theatre Announces Film Star Danny Glover as Lifetime Achievement Honoree for the 30th Anniversary Celebration
HOUSTON, Aug. 15, 2006 -- The Ensemble Theatre will celebrate an "Encore of Excellence -- 30 Years Strong & Growing" in commemoration of its 30 years of service to the Houston community as it launches its 2006-2007 production season. This prestigious celebration will be held August 25th-27th, 2006 and promises to be even more spectacular as the Ensemble honors members of the theatre and community who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in enhancing the theatre and fine arts.
The Ensemble is proud to announce world renown film and television star, Danny Glover, as the 2006 "Lifetime Achievement" honoree. Glover, with a commanding presence and career in film, stage and television, began his acting career on the stage and starred in some of the biggest films of the 1980's and 1990's. Some of his many film credits include: The Color Purple, Grand Canyon, Silverado, Angels in the Outfield and of course the Lethal Weapon series to name a few. Some of his many highly acclaimed television appearances include: Mandela, for which he received the NAACP Image Award and a Cable ACE Award, PBS's production of the classic A Raisin in the Sun, ABC's Lonesome Dove, Alex Haley's miniseries Queen, and TNT's Buffalo Soldiers. Glover returned to Broadway in 2003 in a revival of Master Harold to rave reviews.
Glover is also one who is very passionate about his community activism and philanthropic efforts and is deeply involved with the Vanguard Public Foundation based in San Francisco, his hometown. In 2001, he assumed the board chairmanship of TransAfrica forum, the African American lobbying organization on African and the Caribbean; and he has served as UNDP Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program, which focuses on issues of poverty, disease and economic underdevelopment in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean; he actively serves on the board of The Algebra Project, a math empowerment program developed by civil rights veteran Bob Moses; and he currently serves as UNICEF Ambassador.
The Ensemble's other distinguished honorees include: famed feature film and television star of CBS's "Young & the Restless," Victoria Rowell, as the "Actor of the Year" honoree; native Houstonian, former Ensemble young performer and Broadway star DeQuina Moore as the "Rising Star" honoree; and Shell Oil Company will receive the Corporate Partner Award for its continuous financial support and dedicated community service.
The honorees will be presented their awards at the Black Tie Gala on Friday, August 25th at 6:30 pm at the Hilton Americas Hotel. Other events include the "Subscriber's Kickoff Party -- A Salute to the 70's" on Saturday, August 26th at The Ensemble; and wrapping-up the weekend activities on Sunday, August 27h at The Ensemble from 1:30-4:pm, the Family Day Party will be held.

Founded by the late George Hawkins, The Ensemble Theatre is celebrating 30 years of uninterrupted performances during its 2006-2007 season. Each year, The Ensemble presents an annual repertoire of six critically acclaimed dramas, comedies and musicals that demonstrate the artistic ability of professional local, regional and national artists and support staff. The Ensemble is one of the largest African American professional theatre company in the U.S. that produces its plays in-house, has a comprehensive educational outreach initiative and owns its own facility.
