Northrop Grumman Offers Computer-Based Training Courseware for Marine Navigation

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Dec. 6, 2006 - Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) today announced the introduction of a suite of computer-based training courseware for the U.S. Navy's new-generation ship navigation systems.

The interactive courseware was developed by Northrop Grumman's Sperry Marine business unit, the leading supplier of integrated bridge systems for the U.S. Navy. The computer-based training package is designed to meet basic watchstanding requirements for electronic chart display and information systems – navy (ECDIS-N). It is based on Sperry Marine's Voyage Management System (VMS), which is the standard ECDIS-N software used on most U.S. Navy surface ships and submarines.

The courseware includes 16 interactive lessons covering all aspects of VMS operation. It is designed to provide introductory knowledge and detailed operation for new users, as well as refresher and proficiency training for experienced users. The lessons were written by Sperry Marine subject matter experts with extensive real-world experience in marine navigation. The software license for the courseware includes regular updates to ensure that it stays current with the latest operational VMS software.

"Sperry Marine developed this courseware package to fill the identified training gap that currently exists between the Navy's organic VMS training programs ashore and afloat," said John Pyron, director of U.S. defense marketing for Sperry Marine. "As the Navy transitions from traditional paper nautical charts to ECDIS-N, there is an urgent need for up-to-date watchstander training tools to ensure there is no compromise in safe ship navigation."

"The VMS training modules permit watchstanders to learn aboard ship on the actual installed navigation systems without detaching to training programs at shore-based facilities, many of which are not yet equipped with the hardware and lesson plans to teach the new technology," Pyron said.

"The interactive courseware incorporates feedback and input obtained from over 10 years of training critiques from the fleet, resulting in a suite of lessons tailored to the real-world needs of U.S. Navy fleet commands," Pyron added.

Sperry Marine, with worldwide headquarters in Charlottesville, Va., and major engineering and support offices in New Malden, United Kingdom and Hamburg, Germany, is part of Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems sector.
