PALMDALE, Calif. - July 21, 2009 - More than 15,000 U.S. servicemen and women in Iraq, Afghanistan and other overseas locations will soon receive personal "care packages" from the United Services Organization (USO) thanks to the volunteer efforts of Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) employees who work in the Antelope Valley. A photo accompanying this release is available at http://media.globenewswire.com/noc/ On Saturday, July 18, more than 500 employees converted a Northrop Grumman facility in Palmdale that produces F-35 Lightning II center fuselages during the week into a high-speed human assembly line producing military "products" of a different type: two-gallon, zip lock plastic bags containing personal items such as sun screen, packaged body wipes, granola snacks, playing cards, prepaid international phone cards, disposable razors and chewing gum. In less than four hours, the volunteers stuffed approximately 15,000 care packages. "Northrop Grumman's Antelope Valley employees brought to this USO event the same commitment to quality and support for our troops that they bring to every product we make for U.S. military personnel," said Tommy W. Tomlinson, vice president of production operations and site manager for Northrop Grumman's Palmdale site. "We actually had more than 1,100 employees sign up for the 500 or so slots available for today's event." More than 2,600 people work at Northrop Grumman facilities in the Antelope Valley, added Tomlinson. Those sites include its Palmdale Site at Air Force Plant 42; flight test support at Edwards Air Force Base; and a test range in Tejon. Saturday's event marked the last of five USO care package stuffing events that Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector has hosted in 2009. Collectively, those events have produced more than 70,000 care packages for U.S. servicemen and women. In addition to helping stuff care packages this weekend, Northrop Grumman also presented USO with checks totaling more than $56,000: a check for $50,000 from USO fund-raising activities by Antelope Valley employees to support the USO Chapter at Ontario International Airport, and a check for approximately $6,500 from Northrop Grumman employees at Tinker Air Force Base to support USO Worldwide. The USO is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the troops by providing morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform. The USO currently operates more than 135 centers worldwide, including ten mobile canteens located in the continental United States and overseas. Northrop Grumman Corporation is a leading global security company whose 120,000 employees provide innovative systems, products, and solutions in aerospace, electronics, information systems, shipbuilding and technical services to government and commercial customers worldwide.
