Houston Businessman Alec Dreyer Expected to be Named PHA Executive Director

Port Commission Will Act On Recommendation At Regular Sept. 29 Meeting

HOUSTON, Aug. 27, 2009 -- Port Commission Chairman James T. Edmonds announced that Houston businessman Alec G. Dreyer is expected to be named executive director of the Port of Houston Authority. The Port Commission will consider the recommendation at its regular Tuesday, Sept. 29 meeting.

Dreyer was most recently chief executive officer of Horizon Wind Energy, LLC, a Houston-based wind energy developer. Prior to that, Dreyer was an executive vice president of Dynegy, Inc., in charge of the generation division. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Comverge, Inc., a leading clean energy company, which provides demand response and advanced metering solutions to electric utilities and their customers. He also serves on the board of EcoSecurities Group plc, which is in the business of sourcing, developing and trading carbon credits.

The Port Commission initiated a national search for the position through DHR International, following former PHA Executive Director H. Thomas Kornegay's retirement on Feb. 1 after 37 years of service. Wade Battles, who has been PHA managing director since 1999, served as acting executive director while the search was under way.

"We're all extremely excited about the prospect of Alec Dreyer joining the port authority as its new executive director," said Chairman James T. Edmonds. "Alec has an exemplary business track record. We are confident he is the right person to bring a new perspective to the port authority and we are looking forward to his leadership. The Port Commission believes that his business acumen will further advance PHA's mandate, which is to create economic development and jobs through maritime commerce."

"I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the port commissioners, port authority staff, and our stakeholders to serve our community. I appreciate the commission's confidence in my ability to contribute to the ongoing success of this dynamic international organization," said Dreyer.

Dreyer, a certified public accountant in Illinois and Missouri, has also served in executive positions at Illinova Corporation, Illinois Power Co., Illinova Generating Company and Price Waterhouse. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Illinois, Dreyer earned his MBA from Washington University in St. Louis.

The Port of Houston Authority owns and operates the public facilities located along the Port of Houston, the 25-mile-long complex of diversified public and private facilities designed for handling general cargo, containers, grain and other dry bulk materials, project and heavy lift cargo, and other types of cargo. Each year, more than 8,000 vessels call at the port, which ranks first in the U.S. in foreign waterborne tonnage and second in overall total tonnage. The port authority plays a vital role in ensuring navigational safety along the Houston Ship Channel, which has been instrumental in Houston's development as a center of international trade. The Barbours Cut Container Terminal and Central Maintenance Facility are the first of any U.S. port facilities to develop and implement an innovative Environmental Management System that meets the rigorous standards of ISO 14001. PHA is the first port authority in the world to receive ISO 28000:2007 certification for Port Police and the perimeter security operations at both the Barbours Cut and Bayport Terminals. Additionally, the port is an approved delivery point for Coffee "C" futures contracts traded on the New York Board of Trade's Coffee, Sugar & Cocoa Exchange.
